BIRDJAZZ at Bordello Galeria

BIRDJAZZ at Bordello Galeria
John Hillmer Returns to San Miguel
by Kristen Fry

OK, so the guy is a little obsessed with jazz, birds, buddhas, and Mexico. Hillmer brings his third similarly-themed show to the Bordello Galeria opening this Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon. Two of the shows have opened, not coincidentally, around the time of the San Miguel Jazz Festival. But oh the variations on theme!

Take “Bird in Mexican Hills”, the postcard and evite image. Floating red, orange, and yellow orbs dance with a subtle, multi-colored hand rising up in a gesture of emancipation. Likewise, a blue agave reaches up, while a (sub)lime mysteriously anchors the image buried in the ground. The bird is a long, bright-legged, spiral-eyed presence zigazagging in blue hills. Like many of Hillmer’s works—simple, colorful, earthy, full of energy and symbol.

Hillmer’s work has been playing with music for some time. In fact, his large stage murals have made appearances with Ray Charles, Keb’ Mo’, Robert Cray, and many others. His posters and designs have been used to celebrate more than 50 music, literary, and community events throughout North America.

Years ago Hillmer worked for Earshot Jazz in Seattle and discovered both jazz the music and jazz the metaphor. Recently, he completed designs for the Port Townsend Acoustic Blues Festival in Washington State, which appeared as a huge grandly-lit stage backdrop during performances.

It's a big art weekend in San Miguel, but don't miss an opportunity to jazz up the mix at the Bordello Galeria. A portion of the proceeds will go to Ojalá Niños, whose art, music, and literary programs work with creative kids in the campo.

BIRDJAZZ by John Hillmer, paintings & prints at the Bordello Galeria, Organos #19 (1/2 block off Hernanez Macias). Saturday 5-9 p.m., Sunday 1-5 p.m.

Closing Night Reception for Artist Ruben Morales

Works by Rubén Morales
Closing Reception: Sat, Oct 30  6-8pm
Bordello Galería

Telephone: 152 0732

By Misty Haskett
Bordello Galería will be hosting a Closing Night Reception for the Ruben Morales exhibit  on October 30th from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. If you haven't had the chance to view this work in person, now is the perfect time!
This special exhibit features his first-ever carved stone pieces, as well as Morales’ newest paintings in a variety of sizes. His style continues to appeal with its uncomplicated themes of Mexican street life. Morales’ impressionist renderings of typical Mexican subjects may seem simple at first, but the combination of economy of marks, rich colors and light allows these seemingly naïve paintings to reveal a more complex and intentional piece of art.

Morales regards Diego Rivera as his favorite painter, though only his subject matter reflects Rivera’s style; they both pay tribute to the common man and woman. But Morales impressionist works are technically looser and more flowing than Rivera’s.

Morales, 66, says, “I try to create a feeling or emotion, maybe portraying melancholy or sadness.” He does this through faceless subjects in everyday situations; a woman selling flowers, an old man walking with a cane or a girl washing clothes. The mood is evoked with simple gesture, posture, and color applied in broad strokes.

Still a simple man with simple ways, Morales sells most of his work on the street in Morelia, and despite significant outsider acclaim, his work continues to be fresh and affordable. He has been noticed by international collectors who have sponsored gallery exhibits in Tucson and Phoenix, Arizona; Florida; and Buffalo, New York as well as more locally in Puerto Vallarta. He has been shown in Uruguay and in the well-known state-sponsored Mexican collectiva “Casa de Artesanias” in Morelia. Most recently he received award- winning recognition at the “Salon International des Createurs du Siele” in France.

Please join us at the Bordello Galeria for this last chance to view the current works exhibit.  Admission is free!

Thanks to our wonderful guests for all the great reviews!

We are so thankful to all of our wonderful guests for choosing Casa de la Noche as their home away from home when they are in San Miguel de Allende.  We  really appreciate when someone takes the time to give us their feedback -- and because of all the great reviews, we just received our 2012 Award of Excellence from Tripadvisor -- and we couldn't be more thrilled!

Here is what one recent guest had to say:

“Excellent value- Beautiful Bed and Breakfast"
Reviewed October 21, 2012 NEW

I am an American traveling with mom (we both know many regions in Mexico well). This Casa is lovely, staff incredibly kind, and wonderful amenities. Completely purified water in all rooms (a God send), delicious breakfasts in AM. Great location, 4 blocks from Jardin.

I cannot say enough good things about the staff and owner. They know San Miguel de Allende very well, and are very knowledgeable about artists in the area. We met truly lovely people who were staying there. I cannot say enough good things about the hotel.

This hotel is a great place to get to know people and explore S.M. de Allende. No TV's in room, but really comfortable and beautiful common rooms through out the hotel, where you can relax and watch TV if you like.

It is like a home away from home. I will be certainly going back to stay with them.

Recent Art Show by Artist in Residence Jean Dunbar

“If one allows the imagination to take the artist’s hand, wonderful things can happen. The canvas comes alive with meaning, not only to the artist, but to the viewer.”

Mystical Illusions Series III by Jean Dunbar

A native of Halifax, Nova Scotia, now residing in Vancouver, Canada, Jean Dunbar has pursued a lifelong love of art through a variety of mediums, from ceramic design to oil, acrylic, and watercolor painting.

Now on an extended visit to San Miguel de Allende, Dunbar will show her latest abstractions at the Bordello Galería. Her desire to attend art college as a full-time student was realized when she was accepted at the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design (NSCAD) in 1998. She temporarily moved back to her roots to complete an exciting and successful two years of study.

Since then, Dunbar’s creative aspirations have been furthered by study under Jeanne Carbonetti of Chester, Vermont, and more recently by three previous visits to México. In 2011, she was honored to host her own show at Instituto Allende in San Miguel.

Her artistic philosophy, and the evolving manner in which she expresses herself through acrylics and watercolors, have become the foundation for Part III of the “Mystical Illusion” series. A percentage of sales will be donated to Jóvenes Adelante benefiting educational funding for San Miguel youth. Come and enjoy!

One guest... one history: Pearls

Casa de la Noche and Tahitian Pearls

One of our recent guests Turia Spector said, "There is a pearl for every woman and my devotion is to help them find it."
Surrounded by the simplicity and beauty of French Polynesia as well as the excitement of cosmopolitan cities she very quickly developed a passion for beauty and uniqueness.  Tahitian pearls became the heart beat of her life.

Turia created her own business after working exclusively with Robert Wan (The Emperor of the Pearl).  She owns and operates "Tahiti My Pearl"  and her mission is to provide her clients with the most personal attention possible. She consults professionally for various connoisseurs and is considered a foremost expert.

We really enjoyed our time with Turia during her stay and appreciated learning how to make a ceviche Tahitian style (with coconut milk) with a glass of wine in hand. Saludos!

In the Old Bordello Gallery...

“The Magical and the Mystical” by Dawn Gaskill and DaNisha (Dan and Nisha Ferguson), our current Art Show at the Bordello Galería in Casa de la Noche.

“The Magical and the Mystical”
by Joseph Dispenza
Get ready to take a magical mystery tour on Wednesday, July 25th, when Dawn and DaNisha present their exciting new work at Casa de la Noche. Titled “The Magical and the Mystical,” this showing by three well-known San Miguel artists—Dawn Gaskill, and Dan and Nisha Ferguson—features art that will dazzle and inspire. Their work has a common spirit—one of joy and delight, expressed through intense color and a blend of the sacred and the whimsical.
“I am probably the only artist who wrote a purpose-statement before ever creating anything,” says Dawn Gaskill, who came to art from the world of business. As a consultant to Fortune 500 companies, she taught businesses to develop purpose or mission statements. “So it was natural for me to use those tools to start my career as an artist.”
Dawn’s vision is to joyfully create beautiful art, product designs, and environments that capture people’s imaginations, lift their spirits, and nurture them in their daily lives. She does this by integrating ancient symbols from diverse cultures and spiritual traditions into contemporary designs. When they are displayed in homes or in work environments, they support people’s pursuit of personal and professional intentions. “I call my work Intentional Art,” Dawn says.
Dawn’s work for this show features two new series—an encaustic Feng Shui collection and “The Golden Ones,” a celebration of the divine path of all spiritual traditions. The new Feng Shui series comprise nine paintings that represent the aspects of the classical Feng Shui Ba Gua. The medium she uses to create these is called encaustic painting. Dawn makes her medium with beeswax, resin and colored pigments.
Her new “Golden Ones” series is an extension of her collection “When Every Breath is Prayer.” About it, Dawn says, “Since the beginning of time, every culture has had a belief system in a higher power…something to drawn near to in devotion. I wanted to honor that deep human impulse in my art.”

Canadian artists Nisha and Dan Ferguson knew as children that they would be artists. From early childhood, both were fascinated with drawing. When asked what they wanted to be when they grew up, both answered without hesitation, “Artist!”
They met at the Art Centre of the Central Technical School of Ontario, and, after graduation, married. They are the parents of two sons, Joshua and Julian. Internationally renowned as DaNisha Sculpture, they exhibit their work in prestigious galleries and boutiques throughout Canada, Mexico, the United States, and Australia.
“Over time, our work has evolved in fundamental ways,” says Dan Ferguson. “It is very true that one must always return to the basics in order to improve and hone one’s work.” They use two materials; ceramic and bronze. Their work then consists of three components; sculpture, drawing/painting and design.
Much of their work is characterized by the fanciful dances of animals around the insides and outsides of bowls and other ceramic objects—and cityscapes, sometimes encompassing a whole town with all its buildings around a bowl.
When people speak of DaNisha sculpture, invariably the words used to describe it are optimism, excitement, innocence, wonder, and awe.
“Believing in the power of color was something I came to slowly,” says Nisha. “Grasping the depth of emotion color can convey has been my challenge. I cross into the world of emotion and color with excitement, searching for ways to express feelings and love.”
Nisha, an accomplished acrobat and choreographer, may once have been tempted to run away and join the circus, but instead she founded the successful performance troop in Ontario known as “Gravityworks.” In San Miguel, she reformed and trained a new group, which performs around the state of Guanajuato.
“Working with my life partner and compromising my ideas in order to find something new is a metaphor for our life together,” says Dan. “However, ‘compromise’ is an illusion. Actually, it allows for possibilities neither of us may have thought of.”
The show “The Magical and the Mystical” is a rare opportunity to savor the exquisite art of three marvelous artists. Their work, vibrant and joyful, is a delight and an inspiration.

Painting Workshop! Testimonial

Barbara Hogan and Marcia Dworkin share their experience at Casa de la Noche

I would highly recommend one of Judy’s workshops!

We had a group of about fifteen women, in the delightful environment of Casa de Noche, in San Miguel de Allende.  Some were acclaimed artists, and some had not dabbled in art since elementary school.  We were all given the same colors and supplies, and some initial guidance from Judy.  We then set off on our own explorative, artistic journey.  In the end, each of us had a totally unique piece of art that we were proud of.  Considering we all had the same colors and supplies, it was incredible to see how varied each composition was.  I would do it again in a heartbeat, and highly recommend it to anyone!  (Especially to those who “think” they have no artistic ability…you just might surprise yourself!)

Barbara Hogan – Educator
Carlsbad, California

Imagine a workshop in art where no former  artistic experience is necessary and results are a finished piece in just several hours.  What fun it was.
Your materials are easily manipulated and easily corrected.  Thank you for your patience and extremely clear instructions.
I can hardly wait to try this out with my grandaughter age 7 who loves doing "ART".  I bet her 3 year old brother will want to join in.
What I especially like about it is that those of us with experience created great paintings and those of use who know nothing about art did equally well.
A fabulous technique to include in my toolbox of art  ideas.

Painting Workshop !

Hi! My name is Judy Perrin and I taught my first painting workshop today in San Miguel,in the wonderful surroundings of Casa de la Noche!  What fun we had! I had 12 ladies of varying degrees of art expertise, from beginners to professional painters. I demonstrated the use of YUPO Paper, watercolor, acrylic inks and a little salt thrown in for texture! The individual results were absolutely beautiful, considering that everyone received the same color options.

YUPO paper is a synthetic, shiny, paper that is water resistant and when water and watercolors are applied, the colors mingle to a beautiful translucent wash that sits on top of the paper. Once dry, one is left with a very abstract finished painting. The salt adds a little interest,as it absorbs the damp paint. In combination with each other, these mediums produce a magical effect ,leaving everyone with a masterpiece at the end of the workshop! Each piece is matted and ready to hang! I will be offering my next workshop on Sat. Aug.11 from 10am-12 pm, same place, same channel!  The cost is $300 pesos per person, supplies included. For more info. Contact me at judyperrin@shaw.ca

Thanks ladies,it was a blast!
